On May 12, 1959, in Harlem, New York, Irving Rameses Rhames was given the name Ving Rhames. His father, Ernest, worked as an auto mechanic, while his mother, Rather, was a stay-at-home mom.

After graduating from Manhattan’s High School of Performing Arts in 1978, Ving enrolled at the State University of New York at Purchase (also known as SUNY Purchase), where a classmate named him “Ving.”
