Tamar Estine Braxton was born on March 17, 1977, to Michael and Evelyn Braxton in Severn, Maryland, USA. Her father was a church minister. She is the youngest of six Braxton siblings, with five sisters and one brother, Michael Conrad Braxton Jr.
She was always interested in music and began singing when she was a toddler. Her siblings and she used to sing in the church chorus. She did not complete high school.

Tamar Braxton was one of the five Braxton sisters who created ‘The Braxtons,’ an R&B vocal group, in 1989 and released their first single, ‘Good Life,’ in 1990. As a result of the single’s poor performance, Arista Records canceled its contract with them.
When one of the sisters, Toni, started pursuing a solo career and left the group, the other sisters including Tamar starred in the music video for Toni’s single, ‘Seven Whole Days.’
‘So Many Ways,’ a new album by the sisters, debuted on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list in 1996 at position No. 26.
Tamar quit the trio in 1998 to pursue a solo career, signing a deal with DreamWorks Records. She released her solo album, ‘Ridiculous,’ which had a wide range of musical styles.
