Stephen A. Smith was created in the Bronx, New York, by a hardware store owner’s father. Before taking over the hardware business, Stephen’s father was a well-known baseball and basketball star.
He was the second youngest of six siblings who lived with him growing up. He was born in 1967.
Smith developed a love for basketball at a young age and was able to attend Winston-Salem State University thanks to a basketball scholarship.
Before attending WSSU, he spent a year at the Fashion Institute of Technology. He played basketball for legendary coach Clarence Gaines during his time as a college player.

Stephen started working as a clerk in the Winston-Salem Journal’s sports column shortly after graduating from college After a while there, he moved on to the New York Daily News and briefly worked for the Greensboro News & Record.
