Career

Stephen started working as a clerk in the Winston-Salem Journal’s sports column shortly after graduating from college After a while there, he moved on to the New York Daily News and briefly worked for the Greensboro News & Record.

One of his most significant early career breaks came in 1994 when he began working for The Philadelphia Inquirer. First, he covered NBA games and was assigned to cover the Philadelphia 76ers. He eventually began writing in the general sports column as well.

He moved from print to television and radio in the mid-2000s, starting in 2005. The same year, he began presenting his own ESPN television show, dubbed ‘Quite Honestly with Stephen A. Smith,’ which aired for an hour on August 1, 2005. The show lasted two years before being canceled in 2007. The format of the show includes discussions on sports, politics, and current affairs.

By then, he had become a semi-known television sports celebrity and that led to him appearing as a guest on a few television sports commentary programs such as ‘Jim Rome is Burning’ and ‘Pardon the Interruption’.

In April 2005, he also began his radio career, anchoring a show on WEPN in New York for three years. He left the radio show in April 2008 to focus more on his television journalism career.

In 2015, he sparked another controversy by making a sexist remark about the players ‘not wanting to mess up their hair’ at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Stephen later clarified that it was all a joke and apologized via Twitter.

Also, he started hosting boxing contests, and in 2019, when ESPN took over as the UFC’s television broadcaster, he started commentating on fights. He continued by commenting about the 2020 Academy Awards.
