His parents, Lewis Stine and Anne, were Jews who raised him in Ohio. His father worked as a shipping clerk, and his mother was a housewife. He has two younger siblings.
He started writing stories and jokes on an old typewriter he found in the attic when he was nine years old. He disliked school and was an average student.
He was not interested in playing outside as a boy; all he wanted to do was type down jokes and stories on his typewriters, which he did for hours at a time.
He attended The Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1965. ‘The Sundial,’ the university’s comedy magazine, was edited by him when he was there.

After graduation, he relocated to New York City to seek a career in literature. At Scholastic, Inc., he obtained a position writing books for youngsters.
In his spare time, he used to create children’s funny novels under the pen name Jovial Bob Stine.
He established the kid and teen humor magazine “Bananas” in the middle of the 1970s. Scholastic Press published 72 issues of the journal between 1975 and 1984.
During a company reorganization, he lost his position at Scholastic, forcing him to pursue writing full-time. During this time, he ventured into the horror genre.
