Early Life
Nancy Patricia Pelosi was born in Baltimore, Maryland on March 26, 1940. She was the only girl in the family and the youngest of seven kids.
Both of her parents’ families were Italian.
Pelosi was born into a politically famous family; at the time of her birth, her father was a Democratic Congressman from Maryland who later became Mayor of Baltimore. Thomas D’Alesandro III, her brother, was also Mayor of Baltimore from 1967 to 1971.
Her mother organized Democratic women and was active in the Democratic Party. Pelosi was therefore first exposed to politics when she started helping her father with different campaign tasks at an early age.
She earned her diploma from the Institute of Notre Dame, an all-girls Catholic secondary school, in 1958, and her bachelor’s degree in political science from Trinity College in 1962.
Career
In the 1960s, Pelosi started her political career as a senator, Daniel Brewster’s intern (D-Maryland). She later moved to San Francisco, where she met Congressman Phillip Burton of California’s 5th Congressional District.
She was elected to the Democratic National Committee from California in 1976 and held the seat until 1996. As senator Daniel Brewster’s intern in the 1960s, Pelosi got her start in politics (D-Maryland).
She also served in a variety of other jobs within the Democratic Party throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, including finance director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Following Sala’s sudden death a month into her second term, Pelosi won the subsequent special election and took office as the 5th District representative in June 1987.
