Melissa Arnette ‘Missy’ Elliott was born on July 1, 1971, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Ronnie Elliottt, a United States marine officer, and Patricia Elliott, a power company coordinator.
She had aspired to be a performer since she was a child, but no one paid attention to her.
Her father’s rage and aggressive behavior toward her mother as a child greatly damaged her. She and her mother had fled her father’s house by the time she was fourteen.

Career
She made her debut in the music industry when she and her pals formed the R&B group Fayze. The group came up with various demo tunes including the promo, ‘First Move.’
In 1991, she piqued the interest of Jodeci member and producer DeVante, for whom she sang backstage during a Jodeci concert.
DeVante was so impressed by Fayze’s performance that he helped her travel to New York, where she signed with Elektra Records. Sista, the group made up of Elliott, Timbaland, and Barcliff was given a new moniker.
She co-created the debut Sista record, ‘4 All the Sistas Around Da World,’ with her friends. The record, however, was never released. Nevertheless, one of its songs, ‘It’s Alright’ was featured in the 1995 movie, ‘Dangerous Minds.
