California’s Culver City is where Michael Anthony Richards was born on July 24, 1949. He is the son of William Richards, an engineer, and Phyllis Richards, a librarian. Michael was just two when his father tragically passed away in a vehicle accident.
Richards attended the California Institute of the Arts after graduating from Thousand Oaks High School and earned a BA in theater from The Evergreen State College in 1975. He also did a brief improv performance with Ed Begley Jr. around this time.
He enlisted in the Army in 1970 during the Vietnam War and served there for two years before being honorably discharged.

In 1979, he received his big TV break when he appeared in Billy Crystal’s first cable TV special. Richards appeared on ABC’s “Fridays” in 1980 when Larry David was a writer.
