Love was raised in Detroit, Michigan’s Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects. She worked as an electrical engineer before becoming a comedian, something she mentions in several of her jokes.
She worked on the General Motors assembly line after graduating from Cass Technical High School in 1985, placing doors on 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlasses, which sparked her interest in electrical engineering.
Love then earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Prairie View A&M University in Texas.
While attending Prairie View, she minored in music and belonged to the Delta Sigma Theta Eta Beta chapter. She found stand-up comedy after winning a $50 contest and performed frequently while an undergraduate.

Career
After competing on Star Search and making it to the finals but losing to the eventual winner John Roy, Love started her comic career in 2003.
She’s since appeared in several additional films and television shows. In 2009, Campus Activity magazine named Love a “Hot Comic,” and Variety and Comedy Central ranked her as a “Top 10 Comic to Watch.” In 2003, the US Comedy Arts Festival awarded her the Jury Prize for best stand-up.
In 2008, Love began working for CNN as a correspondent for D. L. Hughley Breaks the News., covering President Barack Obama’s inauguration.
America’s Sister, Love’s first one-hour Comedy Central special, was recorded in late 2009 and debuted on May 8, 2010.
Her first humorous self-help book, “Love Him Or Leave Him But Don’t Get Stuck With The Tab,” was released in July 2013. It was published by Simon & Schuster.
Love co-hosted the syndicated daytime chat show The Real alongside Adrienne Bailon, Tamar Braxton, Jeannie Mai, and Tamera Mowry from July 15, 2013, to June 3, 2022.
