Richie, Jr., Lionel Brockman’s son, was born on June 20, 1949, in Tuskegee, Alabama. He was raised on the Tuskegee Institute’s campus.
He attended Joliet Township High School in Joliet, Illinois, and was a standout tennis player there.
On a tennis scholarship, he attended Tuskegee Institute and finished with a B.S. in economics.
During his time at Tuskegee, Richie formed several R&B groups. Richie briefly attended Auburn University to pursue graduate degrees.
Career
In 1968, Lionel began performing with the Commodores as a saxophonist and singer. The band signed a one-record deal with Atlantic Records in 1968 before moving to Motown Records.
The Commodores rose to prominence with hits including “Brick House,” “Machine Gun,” “Easy,” and “Three Times a Lady.”
In the late 1970s, Richie started writing songs on a commission basis for other musicians. He penned “Lady,” which became Kenny Rogers’ number-one song in 1980.
Richie sang the title song for the film “Endless Love” as a duet with Diana Ross in 1981. It was one of Motown’s biggest successes and received an Academy Award nomination.
