He attended Joliet Township High School in Joliet, Illinois, and was a standout tennis player there.

On a tennis scholarship, he attended Tuskegee Institute and finished with a B.S. in economics.

During his time at Tuskegee, Richie formed several R&B groups. Richie briefly attended Auburn University to pursue graduate degrees.

In 1968, Lionel began performing with the Commodores as a saxophonist and singer. The band signed a one-record deal with Atlantic Records in 1968 before moving to Motown Records.

The Commodores rose to prominence with hits including “Brick House,” “Machine Gun,” “Easy,” and “Three Times a Lady.”

In the late 1970s, Richie started writing songs on a commission basis for other musicians. He penned “Lady,” which became Kenny Rogers’ number-one song in 1980.
