Career
Mawae attended Louisiana State University, where he played football for the LSU Tigers from 1989 to 1993. In 1989, he was redshirted. He started seven games as a left tackle as a freshman in 1990 and was also the Tigers’ long snapper.
He received a first-team All-SEC selection after his sophomore season, having played three different positions: left tackle (8 games), center (3 games), and left guard (1 game). As a junior, he was named second-team All-SEC and third-team All-American while playing left tackle.
He switched from left tackle to center for all 11 games of his senior season. After his senior year, he participated in the Blue-Gray Game and the Senior Bowl.
Mawae joined the NFLPA’s executive committee in 2002. In March 2008, he was chosen as president, and he was again chosen in 2010.
Mawae resigned from the NFL in September 2010, but he stayed in that post until his tenure expired in March 2012.
Mawae’s term fell during the 2011 NFL lockout, which he has said he believes hastened the end of his playing career and the passing of longtime NFLPA executive director Gene Upshaw.
Players from the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings “raised an index finger” during the 2010 NFL kickoff game broadcast, a gesture Mawae has called “one of the proudest moments I ever had.”
