Chatwin was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia. He is the son of Suzanne (née Halsall), a mixed-media artist, and Brian, an engineer who founded and served as President and CEO of Chatwin Engineering, a civil engineering and construction business in British Columbia, in 1982.
Chatwin’s parents divorced in 2010. His late grandfather was of French Canadian ancestry. Chatwin’s younger sister, Brianna, is a tattoo artist. They were raised as Catholics.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Chatwin enrolled at the University of British Columbia to study engineering after graduating from high school, but after just one week, he changed his major to commerce. He only stayed for one semester.
Chatwin got into acting after being “dared by a buddy to go on an audition for a TV program in Canada,” he says. “I accepted the dare, having no idea what I was getting myself into.” I got employed after being called back.

Chatwin made his film debut as an eager fan in the 2001 musical comedy Josie and the Pussycats.
