Franzen grew up in an upscale area, on 83 Webster Woods Drive in Webster Groves, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis, and graduated with honors from Swarthmore College in 1981, with a degree in German.
During the 1979-80 academic year, he participated in Wayne State University’s Junior Year in Munich program as part of his undergraduate study. While there, he met Michael A. Martone, the inspiration for the character Walter Berglund in Freedom.
In 1981-82, he received a Fulbright Scholarship to study at Freie Universität Berlin in Berlin; he speaks fluent German. In 1982, Franzen married and relocated to Somerville, Massachusetts to pursue a career as a novelist.
He worked as a research assistant at Harvard University’s Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences while writing his debut novel, The Twenty-Seventh City, and co-authored several dozen publications.
Career
The Twenty-Seventh City, published in 1988, is set in Franzen’s hometown of St. Louis and deals with the city’s fall from favor, St. Louis holding the “fourth city” in the 1870s. This expansive work was well-reviewed, establishing Franzen as a novelist to watch.
The Twenty-Seventh City was “a conversation with the literary figures of my parent’s generation, the great sixties and seventies Postmoderns,” according to Franzen in an interview with author Donald Antrim for Bomb Magazine.
Later, he added, “I was a skinny, frightened kid attempting to write a big novel. I put on the mask of a rhetorically tight, highly brilliant, incredibly informed middle-aged writer.”
