Early Life

Jackie Cipiti and Jack Harbaugh welcomed John into the world in Toledo, Ohio.

While his father Jack was working as Bo Schembechler’s assistant at the nearby University of Michigan, John Harbaugh attended Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he later received his diploma.

At Miami University, where he attended college and played defensive back on the football team, Harbaugh earned his degree in 1984. The late Brian Pillman and he shared a room in college.

Career

When Andy Reid took over as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999, Harbaugh was one of the four coaching staff that Rhodes had retained when he initially hired him in the NFL in 1998.

In the years before that, Harbaugh worked as an assistant professor at Indiana University (1997), University of Cincinnati (1989–1996), Morehead State University (1988), and Western Michigan University (1984–1987).

2004 saw talk of Harbaugh as a potential choice to succeed Gary Darnell as head football coach at Western Michigan University.

In addition to coaching football as an assistant from 1984 to 1987, Harbaugh received his master’s degree at WMU.

Harbaugh appointed Cam Cameron, a veteran NFL offensive coach and a former head coach, as his offensive coordinator on January 23, 2008.

(in 1997, Cameron had originally hired Harbaugh as an assistant at Indiana University). During their tenure at the University of Michigan, Jim Harbaugh, John’s brother, had Cameron as his quarterback’s coach.

In his first game as head coach, Harbaugh led the Ravens to a victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on September 7, 2008.

Up until that moment, no club had ever triumphed while Joe Flacco was both the head coach and the starting quarterback in the NFL.

Rex Ryan left the Ravens on January 26, 2009, to accept his first head coaching position, and Harbaugh appointed Greg Mattison as his replacement (with the New York Jets).

At Western Michigan University from 1981 to 1986, Mattison coached linebackers and oversaw the defense under Jack Harbaugh. As a graduate assistant and Harbaugh’s father’s assistant coach at WMU, Mattison also coached with him.

On February 14, 2011, Harbaugh agreed to a three-year contract extension that will keep him employed through 2014.

On Thanksgiving Day in Week 12 between the Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers, Jim, the younger brother of Harbaugh, was introduced to him.

On Thanksgiving, John outscored Jim 16-6. With a 12-4 record, the Ravens won the AFC North and swept the Steelers under Harbaugh’s direction.

Lee Evans intercepted the game-winning pass, but the Ravens fell to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game because Billy Cundiff failed to convert on a field goal that would have tied the score. The 53-man roster for 2012 does not include either Evans or Cundiff.

Recently! John Harbaugh became mired in the minutiae of analytical reasoning.

Harbaugh would have been safe had he just stated, “We wanted to be aggressive, we wanted to get the touchdown, and we wanted to make it harder for Buffalo to win.”

Instead, Harbaugh said that it was an unbiased, reasonable legal judgment. He essentially feels sorry for you if you are unable to recognize that.

If you make the field goal, the game goes from three to four downs.

The Bills have four downs to convert all the way down the field with a chance to once again score seven points, so you’re sending them out there and putting your defense at a disadvantage, and then you lose the game on a touchdown, “explained Harbaugh.

The worst scenario is that we don’t have the ball at the 2-yard line, in which situation we would have them substantiated because I am certain that the defense would be able to stop them there if we had the ball there.

We regrettably lost the game because it didn’t turn out that way. So, in hindsight, you might argue the arguments, but if you look at it critically, you can see why we made the decisions we did.”There is much there. Let’s rapidly unpack it.

To prevent Buffalo from kicking a field goal to force overtime, Harbaugh wanted the score.

Harbaugh had faith in his defense to stop the Bills from launching a 75-yard touchdown drive to tie the game, even though they would still have four downs to advance the ball (or win it with a two-point conversion). Got it.
