Joel Grey was born Joel David Katz in Cleveland, Ohio on April 11, 1932. Mickey Katz, his father, was a Jewish actor, pianist, and comedian, and Goldie “Grace” Katz was his mother (nee Epstein).
While residing in Los Angeles, California, Joel attended Alexander Hamilton High School. Because he hailed from a family of actors, Joel was lured to performing at a young age.
At the age of eight, he began his acting career in the Cleveland Play House’s Curtain Pullers Children’s Theatre Program. Among his early plays were ‘On Borrowed Time,’ ‘Jack of Tarts,’ and ‘Grandmother’s Slyboots.’

In 1952, Joel Gray made his cinematic debut in ‘About Face.’ In 1956, he made his television debut on ‘Producer’s Showcase.’
From 1952 through 1958, he was featured in TV series such as ‘Telephone Time,’ ‘December Bride,’ ‘The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom,’ and ‘The Court of Last Resort’ before landing the role of Theodore “Laurie” Lawrence in the classic ‘Little Women.’ In 1959, he played Billy the Kid in the popular American Western TV series Maverick.’
