Speakman was born and reared in the Chicago suburbs, where he was an All-American springboard diver at John Hersey High School.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Missouri Southern State College.
He stated that he became interested in martial arts after seeing the television show Kung Fu, and he began by studying the Okinawan martial art until obtaining black belt status.
His instructor then advised him to seek out Ed Parker, a friend of his master, if he was serious about pursuing martial arts as a career.
Speakman sold his automobile to cover relocation costs and ran across Parker at one of the latter’s tournaments. Speakman studied American Kenpo for years under his main instructor, Larry Tatum, and the system’s creator, Parker.

Speakman began acting in 1988 and got his first major part in 1991 with the release of The Perfect Weapon. He then went on to star in the feature picture Street Knight.
