Early Life

Turrell began experimenting with light in his Santa Monica studio, the Mendota Hotel, in 1966, with the rise of the so-called Light and Space group of artists in Los Angeles, Robert Irwin, Mary Corse, and Doug Wheeler were among those who took part.

Turrell constructed his initial light projections by covering the windows and only allowing regulated quantities of light from the street outside to enter through the holes.

He employed screened barriers in Shallow Space Constructions (1968), allowing a dazzling effusion of veiled light to produce an artificially flattened impression inside the provided space.

The next year, he participated in the Los Angeles County Museum’s Art and Technology Program, where he investigated perceptual phenomena alongside artist Robert Irwin and psychologist Edward Wortz.

In 1969, he collaborated with Sam Francis to create sky paintings using colorful skywriting smoke and cloud-seeding chemicals.

The Mendota Stoppages, a crucial habitat Turrell created from 1969 to 1974, employed numerous rooms in the former Mendota Hotel in Santa Monica that were shut off, with the artist controlling the window openings to enable natural and artificial light to penetrate the gray areas in specific ways.

Career

Turrell began his series of “skyspaces” (enclosed spaces accessible to the sky through a hole in the roof) in the 1970s.

A Skyspace is an enclosed chamber that can hold up to 15 people. Inside, viewers sit on benches along the edge, looking up into the sky through a hole in the ceiling.

Turrell designed the Live Oak Meeting House for the Society of Friends as a lifelong Quaker, with an aperture or sky hole in the ceiling, where the concept of light takes on a strong religious significance. (See the PBS documentary.)

Meeting (1986) at P.S. 1 is a reproduction of such a meeting house, consisting of a square chamber with a rectangular aperture carved straight into the ceiling.

Jori Finkel defines a skyspace in a New York Times article on L.A. collectors creating skyspaces in their backyards as a “celestial viewing chamber meant to give the fairly amazing illusion that the sky is within reach – stretched like a canvas over an aperture in the ceiling.”
