Barbara Cox Anthony and airline executive Stanley C. Kennedy Jr. are the parents of Kennedy.
His maternal grandfather was James M. Cox, the 46th and 48th governor of Ohio, newspaper owner, and broadcaster.
In 1970, he graduated with honors from the University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Kennesaw State University bestowed upon him an honorary doctorate in humane letters in 2003.

Kennedy began his career in 1972 with Cox Enterprises, where he worked in several media roles.
He began his career at Cox Newspapers. He worked as a production assistant, reporter, copy editor, advertising salesperson, business manager, and executive vice president/general manager in the newspaper industry.
In 1979, Kennedy was chosen president of Grand Junction Newspapers, Inc., and was soon appointed publisher of the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel.
