Gary Rossington was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on December 4, 1951. Rossington’s father served in the army and died tragically soon after his son was born.
Rossington was reared alone by his mother, and they shared a special affinity. He went on to name his first lavish guitar “Berniece” after his mother.
Rossington loved baseball as a child and aspired to play for the ‘New York Yankees.’ Despite this, the huge influence of ‘The Rolling Stones’ on his adolescence sparked his curiosity. He eventually chose to pursue music as a serious career.

Rossington became known in the music industry as the lead guitarist in ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’ live performances and records. ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ and ‘Free Bird’ are two of their most well-known tunes.
Rossington’s favorite guitar was a 1959 Gibson Les Paul he named for his mother. He is recognized for his fantastic guitar skills in songs like ‘Tuesday’s Gone’ and ‘Simple Man.’
By 1976, the band was quite popular, and they had a tour planned for the week following Labor Day. Rossington was in an accident over the weekend when his freshly purchased ‘Ford Torino’ collided with an oak tree.
Rossington and his wife, Dale Krantz-Rossington, founded their band, “The Rossington Band,” in 1986. They issued two albums, the first in 1986 and the second in 1988.
‘Lynyrd Skynyrd’ was reconstituted in 1987. Rossington joined them on their three-year tribute tour. Rossington has since joined the reformed ‘Lynyrd Skynyrd.’
After the passing of keyboardist Billy Powell in 2009, he is the only founding member who is still involved with the band.
