Earl Simmons, better known by his stage moniker DMX, was born on Dec 18, 1970, in Mount Vernon, New York. He was raised by his mother, Arnett Simmons, who was 19 at the time of his birth.
In the year that Simmons turned five, his family moved to Yonkers, New York. He was raised in the Jehovah’s Witness community, which was difficult. He was treated unfairly by his mother and his friends.
Simmons spent more than a year at the Julia Dyckman Andrus Children’s Home after being expelled from school in the fifth grade. He then returned to a different boys’ home as a teenager.

In 1992, after agreeing to a deal with Columbia’s Ruffhouse label, he released his debut single, “Born Loser.” This seemed to be DMX’s promising beginning, but the company underpromoted his song, and he was quickly let go from his contract.
