Career
Galvin worked part-time for Motorola during his college years, from 1967 until 1973.
He worked full-time in sales, sales management, marketing management, and mobile two-way radio product management from 1973 to 1983, taking a year off in 1975-77 to attend graduate business school.
From 1983 to 1985, he was marketing director and subsequently general manager of Motorola Inc.’s Tegal semiconductor equipment segment.
In 1985, he was named vice president and director of Motorola’s radio paging Division, where he oversaw Project Bandit, one of the first practically entirely automated production facilities in the United States.
Galvin was promoted to corporate vice president and paging general manager.
In 1988, he was named the corporation’s top corporate staff officer, later senior vice president, and nominated to Motorola Inc.’s Policy and Operating Committees.
In 1990, he was elevated to the assistant chief operating officer position and became Motorola Inc.’s third member of the CEO’s office. 1993 marked the beginning of his tenure as president and chief operating officer.
In 1997, he was appointed CEO. In 1999, he added the chairman of the board to his duties as CEO.
On September 19, 2003, the board of directors publicly declared that it will seek a new CEO.
“The Board and I do not share the same view of the pace, strategy, and progress at this stage of the turnaround,” Galvin declared in response to the board’s assessment of Galvin’s turnaround efforts. Galvin stepped down on January 4, 2004.
Galvin left Motorola to become chairman of the board of Navteq Inc. (2004-2008) and then Cleversafe Inc.
