Charles Robert Schwab, Jr. was born in Sacramento, California on July 29, 1937. During his childhood, his family moved to Santa Barbara, California.
He was the captain of the golf team at Santa Barbara High School. In 1959, he graduated from Stanford with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He also earned an MBA from Stanford.
Career
With three partners, Schwab founded the Investing Indicator newsletter in 1963. At its peak, the newsletter had 3,000 subscribers paying $84 per year.
Schwab and his colleagues formed First Commander Corporation in the spring of 1971 to provide brokerage services while continuing to publish the weekly.
In September 1975, Charles Schwab & Company launched its first branch in Sacramento. It quickly spread throughout California.
Bank of America offered him $53 million in BofA shares in exchange for his 37% ownership position in his company in 1981. He remained president of a mostly independent entity with $41 million in sales after the sale.
Charles R. Schwab resigned as CEO in 2008. He is the chairman of his company and its largest shareholder, holding 15% of the stock. Currently, Charles Schwab & Company manages more than $1 trillion in client assets throughout the world.
In the fall of 2019, Schwab cut trading commissions and offered fractional share purchases to attract younger clients.
Schwab also disclosed his intention to acquire competitor firm TD Ameritrade in the fall of 2019. The planned merger would result in a massive brokerage with approximately $5 trillion in assets under management.
