Alfred Charles Sharpton Jr. was born on October 3, 1954, in Brooklyn, New York City, to Ada and Alfred Charles Sharpton Sr.
His father abandoned the family in 1963, leaving his mother to sustain the family on her own.
They qualified for assistance and relocated from their middle-class neighborhood to the Brownsville section of Brooklyn’s public housing buildings. He graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School and attended Brooklyn College for two years before dropping out.
Bishop F.D. Washington licensed and ordained Sharpton as a Pentecostal priest when he was nine or 10 years old.
Sharpton became a Baptist after Washington’s death in the late 1980s and was re-baptized in 1994 by Reverend William Augustus Jones, becoming a Baptist pastor.
