Early Life

Alfred Charles Sharpton Jr. was born on October 3, 1954, in Brooklyn, New York City, to Ada and Alfred Charles Sharpton Sr.

His father abandoned the family in 1963, leaving his mother to sustain the family on her own.

They qualified for assistance and relocated from their middle-class neighborhood to the Brownsville section of Brooklyn’s public housing buildings. He graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School and attended Brooklyn College for two years before dropping out.

Bishop F.D. Washington licensed and ordained Sharpton as a Pentecostal priest when he was nine or 10 years old.

Sharpton became a Baptist after Washington’s death in the late 1980s and was re-baptized in 1994 by Reverend William Augustus Jones, becoming a Baptist pastor.

Career

In the late 1960s, Al Sharpton was a popular preacher in his community, even though he was only 14 years old. He’d also been involved in the growing civil rights movement, joining the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

One of the organization’s main goals was to promote workplace equality by putting pressure on business organizations, both socially and financially.

Jesse Jackson appointed Sharpton as the youth director of the New York City office of Operation Breadbasket, an organization that advocates for greater job opportunities for African Americans, in 1969.

In 1971, Sharpton established the National Youths Movement to gather supplies and funding for underprivileged youngsters.

He had made a name for himself as an advocate for those who had experienced racial discrimination by the 1980s.

One of his earliest prominent cases included Tawana Brawley, a young woman who claimed she was kidnapped and raped by a group of white men. Unfortunately, it turned out that these claims were entirely false.

When he protested the Howard Beach homicide in 1986, he earned national attention once more. In this case, three black guys were being pursued by a gang of white teenagers when one of the black men was killed in a car accident.

Al Sharpton led a furious demonstration that shut down the Brooklyn Bridge and the subway service in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The protests were broadcast on national television.

He has also spoken out in support of others, including Bernhard Goetz, Yusef Hawkins, Amadou Diallo, Trayvon Martin, and Eric Garner.

In 1991, he founded the National Action Network, a group dedicated to promoting voter education, assisting small neighborhood businesses, and offering aid to those in need.

At the Apollo Theater in Harlem, the Reverend Al Sharpton oversaw a memorial service for Michael Jackson in June 2009.

Sharpton described Michael Jackson as a “trailblazer” and a “historic figure” who adored the Apollo Theater. Sharpton has known the Jackson family his entire life.
