The New Zealand fast bowler began his cricket career by competing for Central Districts at various age-group levels. He started competing for the Central District under-19s team in December 2009.
He established himself in the senior team the following year, in 2010, when he played his first-class debut for Central Districts against Canterbury in the Plunket Shield. In the game, he took four wickets and was not out (0* & 3*) in either inning.
Then, on September 11, 2010, Milne competed in his first Champions League Twenty20 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Later, Lockie Ferguson, who was injured, was replaced in the T20I World Cup.
