Because of his diminutive stature in comparison to his co-presenters, Jeremy Clarkson and James May, Hammond gained the moniker “The Hamster” from fans while on “Top Gear.”
This picture was reinforced constantly throughout the series, especially in Series 7, when he ate cardboard on camera and replicated hamster-like behavior. During filming a “Top Gear” episode in Sept 2006, Hammond was engaged in a high-speed dragster collision.
