Carlos Vives was born on August 7, 1961, in Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia, and spent his first twelve years of life there.
He and his family went to Bogotá at that age in search of a better life. He studied advertising at Jorge Tadeo Lozano University and graduated with honors.

Vives began appearing in a variety of shows and telenovelas in 1982, including Pequenos Gigantes.
He rose to prominence in 1986 as the titular character in Gallito Ramirez, a film about a Colombian Caribbean coast boxer who falls in love with an uptight girl played by Margarita Rosa de Francisco, his first wife.
