Harry Abdul and Lorraine M. Rykiss welcomed Paula Julie Abdul in San Fernando, California, on June 19, 1962. Her family is Jewish, with roots in Russia and Ukraine. Wendy, her older sister

After a few band members saw her at a LA Lakers game, she received her first important job choreographing The Jacksons’ “Torture” music video. Later on, she also coordinated their “Victory” tour.

Abdul choreographed the massive piano scene involving Tom Hanks’s character in the 1988 film “Big.” She recorded a vocal tape in 1987 using her money, and Virgin Records later signed her.

Despite being a great dancer and choreographer, Abdul was a novice singer who underwent voice coaching to help her improve her voice.
