Career

After leaving high school, Joe Walsh gained widespread recognition as the James Gang’s lead guitarist.

On a European tour, The James Gang served as The Who’s opening act and released some brief singles, including “Funk #49,” which demonstrated his vocal and instrumental versatility.

In 1972, Walsh quit James Gang to join Barnstorm with college buddy Joe Vitale and bassist Kenny Passarelli.

The band lasted three years and released three albums. Their final album, 1974’s “So What,” included many guest appearances by Eagles members. Walsh’s producer, Bill Szymczyk, was also the Eagles’ producer, and Szymczyk suggested Walsh join the team.

Walsh replaced the group’s original guitarist and keyboardist, Bernie Leadon when he joined the Eagles in 1975. As luck would have it, “Hotel California” was the Eagles’ first album to be released after Walsh joined the band.

“Hotel California” became the group’s second-best-selling album of all time with 32 million copies sold, falling behind their greatest hits collection, which sold 42 million copies. There were two singles from the album, “Hotel California” and “Life in the Fast Lane.”

According to the Billboard charts, Walsh’s hard-rocking song “Life in the Fast Lane” peaked at No. 11.

Their second album, 1979’s “The Long Run,” took two years to complete and was deemed a letdown by some critics when compared to “Hotel California,” but it was nevertheless a major economic success for the band.

The album debuted at the top of the charts and sold 7 million copies.

The Blues Brothers, RoboCop, The Drew Carey Show, MADtv, and The Voice are just a few of the movies and TV shows in which he has starred.

The preservation of Santa Cruz Island’s parks has long been a priority for Walsh, president of the Santa Cruz Island Foundation.

In 1980, he ran a faux presidential campaign in which he offered free petrol to everyone. He told WASH FM in 2012 that he would seriously explore running for Congress.

Walsh had an “epiphany” in 1989 while traveling with the New Zealand band Herbs at Otatara Pa, an old Mori archaeological site in the Hawke’s Bay region.

Walsh remembered the experience and praised it as the beginning of his recovery from addiction during a return visit to New Zealand in 2004.

Walsh described how, in 1994, he woke after blacking out on a flight to Paris. He had his passport with him when he arrived, but he had no recollection of boarding the airline. That was his watershed moment, and he has remained sober ever since.
