Early Life
Bowie was born on March 17, 1961, in London, England, to Ben and Cathy “Sammy” Bowie. His father was 6 ft 10 in (2.08 m) tall and had played six seasons with the Harlem Magicians.
When Bowie was 12, his parents split. After the divorce, Bowie resided in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, with his parents.
He subsequently stayed with his maternal grandmother until he went to college, so as not to demonstrate bias toward either parent.
Bowie was a sophomore in college when his father died suddenly from a lung cyst burst at the age of 45. “We loved each other more than two people could,” Bowie said of his father Ben, who died when he was 45 years old.
But we could never say, ‘I love you.’ We were neither of those people. I’m most sad that I didn’t get to tell him I loved him before he died.
Career
Bowie was chosen for the United States Olympic men’s basketball squad in the summer of 1980. In 1980, Dave Gavitt coached the United States Olympic team, with Larry Brown helping. The 1980 US squad was the youngest ever assembled by an American national team.
Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman, Michael Brooks, Bill Hanzlik, Alton Lister, Rodney McCray, Isiah Thomas, Darnell Valentine, Danny Vranes, Buck Williams, and Al Wood were also on the crew.
The United States and 66 other nations boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
Due to the boycott, Team USA was unable to compete in the Olympics and instead played a series of games against NBA all-star teams in various US cities, finishing with a 5-1 record.
The games were known as the “Gold Medal Series.” Bowie was Team USA’s second-leading scorer, rebounder, and shot-blocker in six games against NBA All-Stars, averaging 11.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game. Bowie was 19 years old when he joined Team USA.
He received one of the 461 Congressional Gold Medals created especially for athletes who were rejected several years later.
