At the age of seventeen, Howard moved to California from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and started his skateboarding career with Blockhead Skateboards (where he was given professional status) and Gullwing Trucks.
In 2011, Howard remarked, “It was wonderful living there and a lot of interesting sessions, lot of different people going through there, like Chris Miller that was awesome.” Howard shared a home with the proprietor of Blockhead in San Diego.
In 1991, after Blockhead, Howard skated for Plan B Skateboards. While skating for Plan B, Howard quit Gullwing and switched to Independent Trucks.
