Emmy Awards 2022: Zendaya Becomes the First Black Woman to Win Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series Twice

With “Euphoria,” Zendaya Became the Youngest two-time Acting Winner in Emmy History.

On Tuesday morning, the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles hosted the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony (Monday night in the US). Kenan Thompson of Saturday Night Live emceed the ceremony.

At the 2022 Emmy Awards, Zendaya once again set a record by winning excellent lead actress in a drama series for her role in “Euphoria.”

This is the actress’ second victory in that category; in 2020, Zandaya received an Emmy for her work in the film Euphoria.

The 26-year-old actress has now won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series twice, making her the first Black woman to do so, as well as the youngest two-time Emmy winner in the acting category. For Zandaya’s role as Rue Bennett in Euphoria’s second season, Zendaya earned high marks from reviewers.

Thank you to the Academy, and thank you to my friends and family, some of whom are present tonight. Rue was generously shared with me by Sam Levinson. Zendaya expressed her gratitude for everyone’s support by saying, “Thank you for believing in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.”

Zendaya went on to say that her intention with the show has been to aid in people’s recovery: “Anyone who has loved a Rue, or feels like a Rue, I want you to know that I’m so grateful for your experiences, and I carry them with me, and I carry her.”

In 2020, Zendaya broke a milestone by becoming the youngest Drama Actress to win an Emmy. This year, the actress defeated rivals Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh from Killing Eve as well as Melanie Lynskey and Laura Linney from Yellowjackets, Ozark, The Morning Show, and Yellowjackets, respectively.
